The whole point of free speech is not to make ideas exempt from criticism but to expose them to it.

This seems strange

For the third consecutive day, I get a "Forbidden" message when I try to go to War College. I attempt to go to http://dakotawarcollege.com/

I get a page with the following message on it. What do you think that means?

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Not strange at all. He blocked your computer's ip address from being able to view his stupid ass website.

word verification: "ff" -- go figure.

No shit? "ff" was the verification? As in "Fat F##k?"

My final comment on SDWC was "So sad." That was on Phat Phouch's last post.

Funny, after all these years Phat leaves and the new group bars me from viewing the blog. Oh, ouch.

Oh I'm sure it was Powers who blocked you, not his new gang.

You can still read the blog via an anonymizer, but you won't be able to post comments.

word verification: ppdbag.

I think he may have blocked some other people too. I got the finger wag that it could happen if I wasn't a "nice guest" but so far, I'm still able to connect and comment. And of course, I'm ALWAYS nice, as everyone here knows. Right? Right? Can I get an "amen", boys?

Interesting that the new site has begun to repopulate with a bunch of new pseudonyms. Blogmore went through a few phases like that.

*quana*

(now if I were creative like Neal, I would change that to "guano", but of course I am not. ;^)

Bill, that finger wag was staged and you know it. Pat knows that the doltish dwc freshman class is pathetically flaccid and will shrivel to shrinkage without your stroking.

Sanborn has a way of setting ip's jaw ajar, maybe he could contribute over there. At least he knows how to BE smart.

Larry, are YOU locked out of SDWC?

Bill Fleming said...

Plus, what a terrible metaphor. :^)

Who do you think I am, man, John Boehner?

*pinsle*

Not yet. I have three computers, tho.

I'm not really up for sending people to read Ellis's goofball stuff, Larry. I spent a little time there a while back and found it an exercise in flagellation with a willing dominatrix.

Okay for those who are into that I suppose, but I'm taking the position of Voltaire when asked by the Marquis deSade to attend a second of his orgies because he seemed to enjoy his first foray so thoroughly.

Voltaire is said to replied politely, yet firmly, by saying something along the lines of, "Yes good sir, but I must this time decline. You see, once is philosophy, twice is perversion."

I agree with Bill. Ellis is so insignificant that there is no reason to grant him, even for a short time, any notice at all.

Mr Newland, you can change your IP address yourself. if you google 'how do i change my ip address' you'll get the instructions. pp banned me once earlier this year but i changed my ip address and was back in no time. much to his chagrin. :)

Bob Newland said...

I'll give it a try. Thanx, Mitch.

Depending on what kind of internet you have & your ISP, it's pretty simple to change your IP address.

If you have "always-on" internet, it is usually as simple as unplugging your modem (power, not the cable/phone line) for several minutes. It's best to do it for an hour or so. Most DSL/cable internet providers use rotating IP addresses and if you leave your modem unplugged it will assign your current IP to someone else after a little while. THen when you re-connect it will assign a new IP to you.

In the rare case that your ISP actually assigns you a specific IP address, you can simply call them up and have them change it. Just tell them that you have privacy concerns with your current IP address. Having a static IP address is something that you usually have to pay extra for, so I somewhat doubt that you would have an assigned IP. You never know though.

That assumes that he only banned a specific IP. Let's say your current IP is 72.22.33.444 and he banned that. Your next IP may be 72.22.33.111. Some servers will allow you to ban a whole range op IP addresses. SO he may have banned 72.22.** instead of a specific IP. This would likely keep any IP address you may get from your provider banned. It would also mean that anyone with the same ISP would be banned as well.

If you want to verify whether or not your IP has changed after you unplug the modem, there are a bunch of websites that will show you your IP address.

Here's one.

There is another type of ban that some servers will allow. It's called a MAC ban and it is more hardware specific. It would actually ban your modem or router or network card. That's a pretty sever type of ban though, and it would likely effect many other people as well. There are ways to mask your MAC address, but I'm not sure that it's worth it to get on DWC.

I used to admin an online shoot'em up game and we had to deal with this stuff to ban known cheaters from our servers.
