These shots were made somewhere in west central Montana. According to
Wikiedia: Adults typically measure 138–158 cm (54–62 in) long, weigh
7.7–12.7 kg (17–28 lb), and have a 203 cm (80 in) wingspan.[2]
This is the largest extant species of waterfowl. Exceptionally large
male Trumpeters can reach a length of 183 cm (72 in), a wingspan of
3.05 m (10.0 ft) and a weight of 17.2 kilograms (38 lb).[3]
30 pounds. That's a lot of weight to fly fueled by self-contained energy for the several hundred miles they migrate each year. Amazing.
One always kept an eye on me. Birds that frequent places near roads have learned that moving vehicles are not a threat, unless you're between them and where they're going. They do pay attention when a vehicle stops near them. "C'mon buddy. Just move along. Nothin' to see here."

On another note$ Bob, from Trumpeters to: drummer, guitar, mandolin, songwriter and singer, Levon Helm's "Last Waltz" yesterday in the Catskill Mountains.
Man I've lived in great generations of music.
I agree, Les.
I can't think of any music I hear on hit radio these days that I'd rather hear than Hank Thompson or The Band or Neil Young.
Les you have indeed been a lucky man to have lived when such a talent has graced our presents. I would like to think this might have been one of his last songs.
