Sad day for Roadbuilders

Scott Hickey, lifelong Rapid City resident, died yesterday. He was 57. He was the town's greatest promoter of youth sports, in particular, Little League. In fact, his father, Warner Hickey, a former county commissioner, helped establish Rapid City's Little League and was one of its first managers and coaches. Scott took over those coaching and managing duties for Canyon Lake Little League's Roadbuilders and the Hickey family had been involved with the team for more than 50 years.

Scott battled diabetes for many years. I knew the battle was nearing its end when I took photos of the team this summer. He told me then that he had been told to "get his affairs in order." I will write more about Scott in the coming days. He was a friend and I will miss him.

I first met Scott while serving on the Board of Directors for Canyon Lake Little League back in the 80's. His dedication to those kids was unreal. He was always working toward the betterment of the program.

As a friend, it was difficult to watch his diease take his life, little by little. My greatest admiration for Scott was his decision to live his life as he wanted to live. He was well aware that his lifestyle was taking time from him, and he was perfectly fine with that. He wanted to "live" with what time he had on this earth. Blees his heart- he will be missed by many.
