Termes "Big Bang" video
This is the Termesphere that is featured on the cover of the latest French Edition of Stephen Hawking's "Brief History of Time." To read the interview with Dick Termes and some more background, click here and here.
I think the purpose of the video is to show what the whole sphere looks like — something you can't see in a flat, stationary, 2D photo.
Termes has always had a hard time showing the entirety of his pieces in a 2D medium. In the "old days" we used to take 6 still pictures of it.
The addition of a 3rd dimension (time) is an interesting substitution for an alternative 3rd dimension (space). Low cost video published on the internet provides that opportunity.
In truth, a Termesphere is actually a 4 dimensional art object. i.e. it takes perception in all 4 dimensions to really experience what the piece has to say. For more on this see some of the discussion with Dick about this piece in the post below.
I don't think, in Termes's mind these are really meant to be Ken Burns like documentary productions. Just service pieces that he uses to better show people what a given piece looks like.
