The whole point of free speech is not to make ideas exempt from criticism but to expose them to it.

I've been caught

As both candidates for mayor and their supporters stood in sweltering heat waving at passersby, everybody looked pretty damned parched.

I got them each a case of water and dropped it off for both candidates' crews. I was seen by someone who knows I support Sam, toting water to Alan and his crew. Alan told me his crew had a cooler full of Gatorade, but I left the water anyway...(mostly because I didn't want to tote it back to my car.) And, I suspect that they'll make good use of it. Alan thanked me for the thought. We shook hands. I left.

Why did I give Alan water? I respect his crew for standing in the heat for someone who is willing to take the heat of being a public official and going through the election process. Same reason I left a case of water for Sam's crew.

I like Alan. I don't like his campaign style. But, my they did look tired and parched.

So, if you saw me carrying water to the Hanks camp and thought I deserted Sam's, don't bother calling me. They just looked thirsty.

A fine and decent gesture.

We very much appreciated you dropping that off for us! It was quite tasty.
