What do doctors think of the prospect of Obamacare?

According to a survey by the Medicus firm:

* Nearly one-third of physicians may leave medicine if the healthcare bill passes.
* Over 50% predict the bill will cause the quality of medical care to deteriorate.
* 40.7% stated it would "decline or worsen somewhat," while another 14.4% stated that the quality of medical care would "decline or worsen dramatically".

  1. That's a garbage poll, Bob. This is widely known by all credible pollsters.

  2. This data is perhaps closer to the truth about doc's opinions, although it's not very current.

  3. Here are some things to think about, regardless of what the doctors think (or don't think).

The House Energy and Commerce Committee reminds us what the health insurance bill will do here in South Dakota:

Improve coverage for 513,000 residents with health insurance.

Give tax credits and other assistance to up to 217,000 families and 23,100 small businesses to help them afford coverage.

Improve Medicare for 133,000 beneficiaries, including closing the donut hole.

Extend coverage to 45,000 uninsured residents.
Guarantee that 11,500 residents with pre-existing conditions can obtain coverage.

Protect 700 families from bankruptcy due to unaffordable health care costs.

Allow 67,000 young adults to obtain coverage on their parents’ insurance plans.

Provide millions of dollars in new funding for 46 community health centers.

Reduce the cost of uncompensated care for hospitals and other health care providers by $116 million annually [House Committee on Energy and Commerce, "The Benefits of Health Care Reform in South Dakota," March 2010.

It may not be the plan I want, but it's better than what we have now. And any doctor who doesn't like it SHOULD probably start looking for a different line of work, especially if s/he makes his/her opinions widely known.

  5. Post above deleted due to grammar and typos...

I don't believe your poll is correct or an accurate representation, Bob. And, Bill I don't believe yours is either.

Polls can say whatever you want them to.

There are likely slivers of truth in both. While the Medicus poll may be biased, one can certainly count on a Media Matters poll to be equally biased.

Polls are notoriously unreliable. Gallup is the closest thing I've found to being reliably objective.

Finally, I don't really care what doctors think about the health care bill. How could they possibly know what to think, when they don't know what's in it? Come to think of it, how can Congress?

  6. Hey Bob, are these are the same doctors that said 4 out of five doctors who smoke, recommend Winston.... ?

Health care reform IS coming. Either with some control now, or after the total collapse of the health care industry as soon as no one can afford them anymore (which is coming on DAMN fast now).

The health care industry won't be saved for the few with insurance, although CEO's with big amounts of cash will still get help, (They may have to cross the border somewhere to find doctors who actually wants to heal people instead of just sell health products.)
