The difference between the real deal and a wannabe.

I've been browsing candidates' websites to see if I can figure out what to expect from any of them if they happen to get elected. Gordon Howie kinda fascinates me. He seems to be making a play via Facebook.

"I am smiling today because there are other candidates who WISH they could be the Tea Party Republican. Sorry guys! That spot is taken!!!! I was the Tea Party Republican when it wasn't cool!!!! Thanks to all of you tea party patriots who know the difference between the real deal and a wannabe. :-)”

If you feel like investing a half-hour or so, here's a radio interview in which Howie gets to pretty much expound on what he thinks is important.

Here's what he says at his website:

My Pledge to South Dakota:
I will get the government out of our business
I will protect unborn children
I will preserve the rights and dignity of the elderly
I will make your government live within its means
I will give the Governor's office back to the people
I will keep South Dakota FREE:
The Second Amendment and our state’s rights are foundational
I will not expel God from South Dakota

One might presume at that last remark that a movement to expel God from South Dakota is afoot. Anybody hear any rumors about that? Has Sandy Jerstad introduced a bill?

  1. It's all BS.
How will he balance the state's budget?
Will he make corporations and other tax freeloaders pay their fair share? - are corporate tax breaks "code" for "getting government off our backs".

  2. I think he's right about us being over-taxed. Problem is, he has shown no sign of a clue about the inconsistency of advocating "less government" while also advocating government interference in our personal lives.

  3. Cory H. jumped on the "God" thing last month and got quite a rise out of Bob Ellis. Here's a link:

  4. Aren't the statements "get government out of our business" and "protect unborn children" diametrically opposed?

  5. Thanks for the heads-up, Bill, although I think for a blogger to say, "Good night Irene. Why not pledge not to run naked down Capitol Avenue barking like a dog? Why not pledge to breathe oxygen?"drags the comment to a subterranean satiric level that, I'd like to believe, is an area Decorum Forum skirts like it was toxic waste.

  6. A red-letter day that I have marked on my calendar. Pat Powers H/Ts me on the "real deal" quote. Maybe now SDPB will start calling me when they want a quote from the So. Dak. "blogosphere."

  7. Recent Rasmussen Poll shows Howie a GOP frontrunner at this point, apparently moving right past PP's candidate. Whoops! How did that happen?

  8. Bill, i looked at the Rasmussen poll using your link. Under what metric do you see Howie out in front?

  9. Bill, they only polled for those in the legislature. (As if the inmates are the most appropriate candidates to run the asylum.)

  10. I suppose you'd have to look at the "other" or the "undecided" to hazard a guess on brand loyalty the rest of the candidates. In any case, it's way too early to take any of those data seriously.
