Ok, so who's messing up SD marriages?

Check the chart and this post. What's the deal? Divorce rates are way down in those states that allow same sex marriages or civil unions. But out here in Family Valueland? Well, divorces are up 9.2% in SD. And in Palin's home state? Holy Moose Poop, Todd! Looks like you and Sarah better get the heck outta there, by golly.

Perhaps Nancy Grace can move over to Fox News and she and Palin can solve this problem.

Will Fox news fire her before she quits?

But that can't be! Gay marriage destroys the sanctity of marriage! This has to be true because we've been told it by conservatives all the time!

You wait - the world will end because of this.

note - make sure to read this with the most sarcastic voice possible

Got it, TD. As per the article, there doesn't seem to be any cause and effect either way vis a vis gay marriage. I think that's the main point.

Might decent wages and employers who give you more time off to take care of the kids and family be more important to strengthening marriages than the usual family-values grandstanding?

Eye opening.

Cory, you make a good comment about the very real pressures that bear down on couples. I think SD is one of the highest % states for "both spouses working," and plenty of those spouses hold more than one job.

I think gay marriage is pretty irrelevant, actually. Very small % of the LGBT folks are all that interested beyond symbolism, and now you have high profile "gay divorces" - it's just going to ape the straight culture. The states where the divorce % is down may simply have far fewer people marrying.

We've all reduced marriage to whatever it gives the individual in the short run, so no surprise that it is tanking. Takes much tougher stuff to keep it together.

It could be reasoned that the video lottery is doing it to marriage or that usurious lines of credit sink relationships.

Long winters can fray tempers and burgeoning BMI rates often lead to medical meltdowns; depression stokes race and gender disputes.

Blogging sure is a gas, though.

Schizophrenic much?

After the depression, divorce sky rocketed. When the money is tough, it's cheaper to stay together. Divorce is a costly luxury.

I cannot get the link to open from my phone. What years(s) is the graph reporting for?

Taunia, the change in divorce rates from 2003 to 2008.

IP, one name per blog, please.

Perhaps the two (gay marriage bans and divorce rates) have nothing to do with one another?

Michael. Ya think?
