The whole point of free speech is not to make ideas exempt from criticism but to expose them to it.

Careful who you talk to...

Sam Kooiker's forum piece in the Journal here, discusses the fact that some city employees feel they will be retaliated against if they bring grievances to members of the council, the mayor or the city attorney.

The matter was decided some time ago, but the official action taken by the council has not been published and is not part of the material distributed to new employees. All other ones are, but not this one.

In his memo to employees then, Hanks told them that they are not encouraged to talk to aldermen. Why? Why doesn't our beloved mayor think employees should avoid talking with their elected officials. They get to vote too. They're citizens of this community, are they not?

Hanks is ill served to continue declaring this a non-issue. Publish the resolution declaring the policy allowing city employees to talk with their elected officials without retribution. Unless he is hiding something, he has nothing to lose. Right?
